Description

The Division of the Arts & Humanities invites applications from current or recent graduate students in the Division for a competitive two-year Teaching Fellows Program aimed at enhancing pedagogical skills and research profiles. Teaching Fellows participate in a community of practice focused on teaching, research, and professional development.

Successful applicants will be appointed as full-time Lecturers beginning September 1, 2026.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be current or recent graduate students in the Arts & Humanities Division at the University of Chicago.

  • Have received or be on track to receive their PhD within 7 years of initial registration in their PhD program.

  • Have received their PhD no earlier than Spring Quarter 2025, OR be on track to complete all degree requirements and file the dissertation by July 29, 2026 for Summer 2026 graduation.

  • Identify a faculty sponsor committed to mentoring them during the program.

  • Receive endorsement from their department chair.

Note:
The appointment is contingent upon timely degree completion and lawful U.S. work eligibility by September 1, 2026. International students must secure work authorization from the Office of International Affairs before the start date.


Responsibilities

Teaching Fellows will:

  • Teach four courses per year, typically including:

    • At least one Humanities or Arts Core course;

    • One self-designed course that meets departmental curricular needs;

    • Additional courses aligned with the Fellow’s expertise (including potential language courses or courses in majors/programs).

  • Pursue ongoing research activities, such as:

    • Revising the dissertation for publication;

    • Preparing journal articles;

    • Presenting at professional conferences;

    • Advancing scholarly projects.

  • Participate in structured pedagogical and professional development guided by:

    • The Faculty Director of the Teaching Fellows Program;

    • Their faculty mentor;

    • The Chicago Center for Teaching & Learning;

    • UChicagoGRAD.

Teaching Fellows must be in residence on campus for all three quarters of each academic year.

Restrictions:
Teaching Fellows may not accept any other on-campus employment or receive additional University compensation during the appointment. Summer work requires prior Provost’s Office approval.


Salary and Benefits (AY 2026–27)

  • Annual salary: $62,731

This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with SEIU.

  • Teaching Statement (max. 750 words):
    Must describe methods and goals for teaching a text or artwork in the Humanities or Arts Core.

  • Sample Syllabus for a self-designed undergraduate course (majors and non-majors).

    • Optional second syllabus: for RDI, GNSE, Chicago Studies, or CogSci (RDI especially welcomes proposals for foundational courses).

  • One PDF containing all course feedback reports from teaching done at UChicago.

4. Three Faculty Support Documents

All submitted as confidential letters via Interfolio:

  1. Department Chair Form (progress to degree, dissertation timeline, potential teaching assignments).

  2. Mentor Agreement Form (commitment from a faculty mentor who will be in residence 2026–27).

  3. Letter of Recommendation focused on teaching.

Faculty may submit multiple required documents.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of representatives from:

  • The Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning

  • The Master of the Arts & Humanities Collegiate Division

  • The Dean of Students, Division of the Arts & Humanities

  • The program’s Faculty Director

  • Two additional divisional faculty members
