Lecturer, Disability Studies - Variables Topics in Disability and Music

Job #JPF05984
  • L&S Undergraduate Education - EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES

Recruitment Period

Open November 3rd, 2020 through Thursday, Dec 3, 2020 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time)

The UCLA Disability Studies Program unit seeks a lecturer for Winter 2021 (in Academic Year 2020-21) to teach an upper division undergraduate course in the Disability Studies program. Given the interdisciplinary and evolving nature of the field, Disability Studies at UCLA is looking for our instructors to represent multiple perspectives, and we encourage applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply.

The Disability Studies M113 (multi-listed with Music M113) explores how disability exists in relationship to music performance, reception, and analysis across Western art music and popular music traditions. Students will examine the interaction of disability and music in several ways: through composers and performers whose creative production is shaped by bodily difference and disability; through the disabling capacities of instrument design, notational systems, musical venues, and listening cultures; and through the corporeal assumptions implicit in naturalized conceptions of musical ability and expression. We will also learn about disability activism, advocacy, and allyship in the musical realm. Reading assignments will engage students around interdisciplinary scholarship in disability studies, Deaf studies, musicology, sound studies, performance studies, and empirical scientific discourse.

UCLA has a diverse student population in one of the more diverse cities in the nation; we particularly seek candidates who have taught similarly diverse students in a major research university.

Required Qualifications:
• An earned doctorate from an accredited university
• College-level teaching experience
• Knowledge and training within the field of disability studies, musicology, or related field(s)

• At least three years of college-level teaching experience
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Must be capable of delivering high-quality instruction to a diverse student body
