DUTIES

The School of Education (Faculty of Education and Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University is seeking a sessional faculty member who will teach two credits of Second Language with a Focus on Secwepemc in the Bachelor of Education Program, Fall 2023 semester. 

EDSL 4200 COURSE DESCRIPTION: 
Students are introduced to instructional and assessment strategies that are effective in promoting the learning of a second language by elementary students. The development of a proficiency-based curriculum and concurrent development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are emphasized. Teacher candidates are familiarized with the teaching techniques, procedures, and instructional resources used to teach second languages to children (focusing on Secwepemctsín). Teacher candidates who are interested in teaching other languages are encouraged to adapt strategies to their own specific language and learn to adapt assignments to their target language. 

QUALIFICATIONS

•    Master’s degree strongly preferred.
•    A minimum of one (1) degree in education is required.
•    Expertise in Secwepemctsín language and culture is required. 
•    Three (3) years of full time or equivalent hours teaching in K-12 settings is strongly preferred.
•    Evidence of successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level is strongly preferred.
•    Excellent organizational, interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills are required. 
•    Demonstrated experience in integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
•    Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) is required.
•    Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) is required.
