Position description

Lecturer, Disability Studies
(100% position, 2023-24 academic year)

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The UCLA Disability Studies Program seeks a lecturer for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters to teach one DIS STD course per quarter during the 2023-24 academic year. These courses fulfill requirements for students pursuing the Disability Studies major and minor. In addition to teaching, the lecturer is the administrative lead on the Sports and Society Lab which is part of the larger Disability Studies Inclusion Labs.

The lecturer will be tasked with teaching as follows:

  1. Fall quarter: Disability Studies M161 (multi-listed with Gender Studies M161), Sports, Normativity, and the Body, provides students with an overview of some major topics of discussion concerning intersections of athletic competition and disability, addressing variety of perspectives and themes on disability and sport, such as passing, sports integration, competition versus charity, and masculinity. Students will investigate how ableism, heteronormativity, racism, and colonialism define our definitions of sports performance. Toward this goal, the class seeks an understanding of how disability status, gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality, age and sport delimit athletic participation. The course draws from a range of sources including academic articles, popular and documentary film, television and biographical writings concerning sports in the US and internationally, with particular focus on Pacific Rim countries, youth sports, and the several ‘Olympic’ movements.

  2. Winter quarter: Disability Studies 101W, Perspectives on Disability Studies, asks students to create a critical framework for understanding concept of disability from sampling of disciplinary perspectives. This course is organized around the central tension in disability studies -- between disability as lived subjective experience that is both individual and communal, and disability as objective, medical, legal, and sometimes stigmatized category. Students are encouraged to make connections between units and to create their own perspectives on disability in field that defines itself by how it changes.

  3. Spring quarter: Disability Studies 191, Senior Research Seminars: Disability Studies, asks seniors in the Disability Studies major and/or minor to do an in-depth study of major themes in disability studies research. Themes vary by instructor and term. Students pursue independent research related to the specific course theme, with guidance from instructor, then share and critique other student works in progress.
