UCLA Extension is the open-access, continuing education division of UCLA. The six-course Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is designed for instructors and other professionals who want to develop their professional competencies in teaching English abroad or in US community settings, to school-aged and adult learners. The program covers theory in linguistics and in second language development, methods in teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing, current technologies for teaching English, and cultural competency and cultural diversity understanding. This certificate program is offered 100% online and asynchronously. The certificate program offers students the opportunity to learn from highly qualified practitioners who are passionate about teaching.

Instructor Responsibilities:

• Update course syllabus routinely, to keep material current and to meet campus approval requirements, in consultation with the UCLA Extension Program Director
• Communicate with Program Director, Program Representatives, and Online Course Managers in a timely manner
• Respond to student discussion boards, questions and learning needs in a timely manner, within 24 hours.
• Prepare and deliver online course materials and learning assessments in the assigned format, including assignment grading rubrics.
• Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform
• Design interactive, collaborative, engaging and inclusive instructional activities to fully engage participants with each other and with instructor, for student growth and learning. Provide formative assessments.
• Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies for the course.
• Evaluate each students’ achievement and growth individually, in respect to the identified learning outcomes.
• Post final student grades to the transcript system by set deadlines
• Stay current and apply current knowledge to course, regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice
• Use subject-matter expertise and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum (i.e.: professional journals and publications)

Because Extension is a division of UCLA, all Extension degree-credit instructors and courses are formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement,” usually per course. UCLA Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed Instructor Contract. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the Instructor Contract, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided.
