Position description

Pending enrollment and funding, the Program in Global Languages & Communication (GLC) at the University of California, Irvine anticipates hiring teacher-scholars at the rank of Lecturer to teach courses and to participate in other departmental activities for the 2022-23 academic year. The primary anticipated instructional need for academic year 2022-23 is in our undergraduate courses in academic English (writing courses and reading/vocabulary courses).

The default appointment for successful candidates will be a full-time, 100% time appointment. UCI runs on a quarter (trimester) system, which involves 10 weeks of instruction per quarter. A 100% appointment equates to 8 10-week classes per year (e.g., 3 in fall quarter, 3 in winter quarter, 2 in spring quarter).

Fall quarter service period: 9/19/2022-12/9/2022, 9/12 pay period: 7/1/2022-10/31/2022, 9/9 pay period: 10/1/2022-12/31/2022
Winter quarter service period: 1/4/2023-3/24/2023, 9/12 pay period: 11/1/2022-02/28/2023, 9/9 pay period: 1/1/2023-3/31/2023
Spring quarter service period: 3/29/2023-6/16/2023, 9/12 pay period: 03/01/2023-06/30/2023, 9/9 pay period 4/1/2023-6/30/2023

REQUIREMENTS:
• Doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics or a related field. Candidates whose highest degree is a Master’s degree and have maintained a strong record of demonstrated competence in the field (such as through ongoing scholarly activity or another means), ability in teaching, and academic responsibility will also be considered.
• Ability to teach writing, reading, and/or oral communication courses that align with the Program's goals of serving the diverse literacy needs of multilingual students at a research university.
• Cross-cultural teaching experience that includes, is equivalent to, or is translatable to the teaching of multilingual students at the college/university level at a research university.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to contribute to curriculum and course materials development drawing on recent and relevant research in applied linguistics and related fields
• Record of ongoing scholarly activity including, but not limited to, publications in peer-reviewed venues
• Record of ongoing professional development and achievement
• Ability to teach graduate-level courses in academic English including Dissertation Writing and Writing for Scholarly Publication courses
• Ability to teach courses in any of the Program’s languages other than English

SALARY:
The non-negotiable starting salary, per the 2022-23 Lecturer salary scale, is $7,806.88 per course or $62,455/year for a 100% appointment. APPOINTMENT TERMS AND REVIEW DATES:
This is a limited-term appointment which falls under the purview of the agreement for the Lecturers Unit between University of California and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Terms and conditions of employment are subject to UC policy and the collective bargaining agreement available here: http://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/labor/bargaining-units/ix/index.html. Review of applications will be completed by the Program in Global Languages & Communication Hiring Committee. If selected, first-time appointees in this program will receive a one-year contract. If selected, applicants with a Lecturer appointment during academic year 2021-2022 or who were appointed as a Lecturer in the program before 2021-2022 will receive a two-year appointment. Applicants with a 2021-2022 appointment in the Program and who apply by the 4/7/22 initial review date will be considered prior to all other applicants. Afterwards, applications will be considered on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

1-3 Letters of Recommendation are required for applicants who have not previously taught in the Program. Letters of Recommendation are optional for those who have taught or are currently teaching in the Program.

ABOUT GLC:
GLC offers courses in a range of languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Tagalog, Vietnamese) along with graduate and undergraduate courses in academic English for multilingual students. Our courses for graduate students in academic English include introduction to graduate writing, thesis/dissertation writing, writing for scholarly publication, along with courses in speaking/listening. We also offer a range of academic English undergraduate courses in academic writing and reading/vocabulary. The Program also provides international graduate students who plan to become teaching assistants with assessment programs and support tutorials. GLC’s instructional staff includes multilingual teacher-scholars with doctoral degrees from top universities across the US and around the world. Our instructors frequently present their scholarship at selective national and international conferences and have published such scholarship in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. Our instructors have additionally been recognized for their achievements through local and international teaching awards, along with appointments to leadership positions in inter/national teaching associations.
