Position description

The Department of Film and Media Studies at UC Santa Barbara is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach three courses in the 2023-24 academic year: one 100-student core lecture course in Fall quarter, 2023; and two 100-student elective lecture courses in Winter quarter, 2024.

The Fall course is a 5-unit international film history core course focusing on the period from early sound cinema through the early new wave with a separate time block for weekly screenings. Lecturer is also responsible for course development, grading, holding regular office hours, and supervising two teaching assistants. Winter elective course topics are flexible dependent upon lecturer’s interests and expertise. We welcome innovative courses in any area of film and media studies. For instance, the department is interested in expanding its curriculum in media industry studies, game studies, and queer studies, but will consider all areas. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

At the time of application, candidates must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or international equivalent) except the dissertation in Film, Television, or related Media Practices or a related field and have one or more years teaching experience at university or college level.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

At the time of hire, a PhD in Film, Television, or related Media Practices or a related field is required.

Preferred qualifications

Expertise in film history and experience teaching in at least one other area of disciplinary focus.
