The capacity group Conservation and Restoration is looking for a candidate to teach the theory and practice of textile conservation to students in the Master's programme in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage and the Advanced Professional Programme

What are you going to do

The successful candidate will collaborate with the programme’s current lecturers in textile conservation. He/she will build upon and teach theory and practical coursework in textile preservation and conservation, including knowledge of materials, techniques and construction methods, as well as topics that are specifically relevant to this specialization, such as. He/she will also teach an introduction to textile conservation in the BA minor programme. The candidate will supervise textile conservation treatment and research projects and provide mentoring and advice to the students following the MA and APP phases of the programme.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • co-develop, coordinate and deliver courses in the object-based, hands-on classes for textile conservation;
  • contribute to the development of pedagogical innovation within the Master and APP Conservation and Restoration programme;
  • organize and coordinate the provision of guest lecturers involved in the programme;
  • supervise and mentor student research (including Master and APP theses) and hands-on projects in textile conservation;
  • up-keep and maintaining the textile conservation laboratory;
  • build client relations with regard to internships and acquisition of objects for student hands-on sessions and research;
  • serve on department and university committees, participating in department and university events, and advance the department's public outreach initiatives;
  • attend team meetings;
  • perfore administrative tasks that go with teaching.

What do we require of you

  • Advanced experience and skills in the conservation of textile.
  • MA degree or higher in textile conservation, which may include certificates from internationally recognized academic conservation programmes.
  • Preferably (working on) a PhD related to conservation studies.
  • Demonstrable didactic abilities and/or training, evidenced by an educational portfolio.
  • Demonstrable experience with teaching and co-developing courses for textile conservation at a graduate level.
  • Evidence of scholarly work such as published research and lectures on relevant conservation issues at (international) conferences.
  • Organisational experience and skills.
  • The Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO), or willingness to acquire this within the first two years. Acquiring the BKO is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract.
  • Well-developed communication skills; evidence of ability to work co-operatively and collegially within an interdisciplinary work environment.

Our offer

We initially offer a temporary contract for a period of one year with a probation period of two months. Based on a positive evaluation an extension of one year is a possibility. Preferred starting date is 1 October 2021. The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges from €2,790 up to a maximum of €5,127. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
