DescriptionThe Department of American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a lecturer to teach “Race, Social Justice, and the City” (URB322R) in connection with the department’s Urban Studies undergraduate degree. The course meets 11:30-1:00 Mondays & Wednesdays during the fall 2023 semester (August 21 – December 11, 2023). The course examines ways in which race and inequality are built into the structures and ideas surrounding urban life; it considers factors generating uneven and segregated settlement patterns and justice questions surrounding redevelopment and gentrification. Urban Studies more generally builds student understanding of the complex interplay of forces shaping urban development, preparing students for careers dealing with urban life across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Responsibilities included in teaching this course include developing and revising the syllabus, grading assignments and exams, maintaining grade records, and overseeing the learning management system (Canvas).
QualificationsA graduate degree in a field relevant to urban planning, urban development, urban social research, community planning, or regional planning is required. Teaching experience is required. Demonstrated teaching excellence, experience with instructional design, and experience working in or with public, private, and non-profit organizations in Austin, Texas are preferred.
