Position description

Full-time non-tenure track lectureships with Seventh College’s Synthesis Program at UC San Diego will be available beginning August 2022.

The Synthesis Program utilizes a robust and distinctive approach to students' learning and emphasizes the importance of confronting large-scale, global issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. The three-course sequence encompasses six curricular themes that connect with UC San Diego Competencies:

  • Anti-racism
  • Climate crisis and interconnected issues
  • Critical thinking and reflection
  • Communication and process
  • Problem-solving, creativity and curiosity
  • Teamwork and collaboration

Synthesis 1 and 2 are writing-intensive and SYN 100 is project-based.

Synthesis Program Lecturers will be responsible for teaching sections of SYN 1, 2 and 100. Lecturers will be expected to teach some shared material, develop new lesson plans, mentor student projects, utilize collaborative grading, similar to contract grading, and collaborate with Synthesis Program staff. Support for course design and implementation will be provided by the Director or Associate Directors as well as graduate instructional assistants (for SYN 100).

For this Transition Year only, we will be using AP Recruit to review current/internal appointees and also collect applicants. This process was created to streamline these efforts as the campus transitions to the new process for Unit 18 Lecturers.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A successful candidate must have:

  • A Ph.D., M.F.A., MA, or MS in any field is required by time of application
  • Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate writing courses or mentoring student projects
  • Demonstrated ability and/or intellectual interest in teaching about the climate crisis or intersecting challenges related to a changing planet
  • Familiarity and/or experience with project-based learning
  • Experience in curricular planning and development
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work well in a team-oriented academic environment with colleagues representing many backgrounds and interests
  • An ability to work effectively with students representing diverse backgrounds, interests, and levels of preparation
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in higher education.
