The School of Language, Literature, Music & Visual Culture, in partnership with the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies (RIISS), seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Scottish or Scottish and Irish Literature from 1 August 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The appointment will make a significant contribution to the planning activities for the RIISS 20th Anniversary Conference events scheduled for 2020, and beyond that will make a full research and teaching contribution to the School’s undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes in English Studies more broadly. Expertise in any period of Scottish (or Scottish and Irish) literary studies will be welcomed, particularly from the 18th to 21st centuries, though research interest in areas of contemporary literary theory such as (but not limited to) postcolonial and transnational studies, queer theory, posthumanism, ecocriticism or critical race theory would be an advantage.

 

The successful candidate will undertake research in an area of Scottish or Scottish and Irish Literature. Research interest in areas of contemporary literary theory such as (but not limited to) postcolonial studies, transnational approaches, queer theory, posthumanism, ecocriticism or critical race theory would be an advantage. They will contribute to the undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes offered by English Studies, will undertake supervision of postgraduate research students, will contribute to the activities of the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies and, where appropriate, to the School’s other research centres, and will pursue external funding opportunities. Responsibilities will also include administrative roles as agreed with the Undergraduate Programme Co-ordinator for English and the Head of School in Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture.

 

You will have a PhD in an area of Scottish or Scottish and Irish literature relevant to the requirements of the School. You will have a record of excellent research and publication appropriate for the career stage, a clear plan of research activity for the coming years, including plans for obtaining external research funding and research impact, and experience of teaching at undergraduate level. You will have excellent written and spoken communication skills, and be able to engage with students and promote student learning in a range of ways.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 7 salary scale (£40,792 - £48,676 per annum) and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.
