The Department of Media Studies is looking for candidates to teach in the BA and MA programmes, specifically in the track New Media & Digital Culture. The candidate/s can also be asked to teach courses across Media Studies. The ideal candidates would have considerable knowledge of the study of New Media and Digital Culture in the humanities, especially in the areas of digital research methods and critical internet culture. He or she will also have demonstrable affinity with the media arts, media history, media theory and social media critique. Up-to-date web vernacular knowledge is desirable. Practical experience in working analytically with online platforms (e.g., Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, 4chan, Telegram, TikTok) and web-based applications and tools (e.g., social media analytics) is also desirable.

What are you going to do

The Lecturers will teach mainly on the Bachelor's degree level, in courses concerned with such topics as data journalism, media theory, digital practices, digital methods and information analytics, media history as well as contemporary themes in digital culture, all in the program of Media and Information. The Lecturers also may teach in the Master’s degree program and supervise theses.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • developing, coordinating, and teaching courses within the enter Bachelor/Master track, in cooperation with the staff of the Media and Information programme
  • supervising Bachelor and Master theses;
  • keeping track of relevant scholarship and integrate new insights into teaching;
  • playing an active role in the development and implementation of improvements and innovations in course pedagogy and content;
  • carrying out administrative and management tasks;
  • taking part in committees and working groups.

What do we require

Your experience and profile:

  • completed or nearly completed PhD in a related discipline
  • experience with teaching in bachelor and master programmes at an academic level, specifically in Media Studies;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with ICT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the enter capacity group;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • administrative experience and skills;
  • excellent command of both Dutch and English. Non-native Dutch speakers must achieve an active and passive command of Dutch within two years.
  • University Teaching Qualification, or willing to acquire this within two years.

Our offer

We are hiring four lecturers for 19-26 hour per week. We offer a temporary contract for a period of two years with a trial period of two months. Preferred starting date is 1 August 2021. The UFO profile for this position is, dependent on relevant experience, Docent 4 (scale 10) or Docent 3 (scale 11).

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges from €2,790 tot €5,127. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
