Role Description


The Department of Education wishes to appoint a number of Lecturers (equivalent to Assistant Professor) and/or Senior Lecturers (equivalent to Associate Professor) to contribute to research and teaching across our research centres and degree programmes.

These posts provide an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant and growing department. The successful applicants will play a full part in the research, teaching, supervision and administration of the Department, and will be associated with one of our four research centres: Centre for Research on Education and Social Justice, Centre for Research into Language Learning and Use, Psychology in Education Research Centre or University of York Science Education Group.


We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate a connection to our research strengths and the ability to contribute to our undergraduate and master’s degree programmes. While we are open to a range of different specialisms, the ability to contribute to research methods teaching and/or to our general education programmes would be an advantage.

Your role will be to develop research objectives, projects and proposals and carry out individual or collaborative research projects and to lead on and/or contribute to the production of research outputs and research outcomes. You will also be expected to design, develop and deliver teaching on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, to carry out supervision and to undertake a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.   

You will join a collegial and supportive group of staff in our international department, with staff and students from over 30 countries.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • You will have a PhD in education or in a contributing discipline (e.g. psychology, applied linguistics, sociology etc.) with appropriate academic professional and teaching qualifications or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.
  • You will have knowledge and experience of research in education and/or contributing disciplines, including a range of research techniques and methodologies.
  • You will have specialist knowledge in one or more area relevant to teaching and research in the Department.
  • You will be able to evidence dissemination of research findings through various means, for example, publications in research journals or presentation of papers at conferences.
  • You will be able to design and deliver teaching material across a range of modules and programmes and have evidence of successful course planning and student supervision and knowledge and experience of a range of teaching techniques to enthuse and engage students.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills including the ability to write publications,  develop research objectives, projects and proposals and to disseminate research findings using other appropriate means. 

Appointment to Senior Lecturer would be made primarily in relation to the experience and career stage of individual candidates. In addition to the above, candidates should be able to demonstrate that they meet the following criteria:

  • Outstanding qualities and achievements in scholarship and research at a national and international level and a well established national reputation in education and/or contributing disciplines.
  • A proven track record in research with high quality journal publications and conference presentations and an ability to demonstrate major research leadership both internally and externally
  • Ability to provide academic leadership in research area and to lead a research team where appropriate
  • An extensive track record of teaching and learning in HE at undergraduate and postgraduate level or in a demonstrably similar context and an ability to motivate other staff in the areas of teaching and research.
