Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the  territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the RTA School of Media in The Creative School at invites applications for a Limited Term Faculty (LTF) position at the rank of Assistant Professor in areas of camera-based television technical production. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2022 for a four [4] year term, subject to final budgetary approval. 

The successful candidate will engage only in the teaching production and technically related video courses and service duties (e.g. committee work, student applicant selection decisions) of faculty members in the School, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across such activities. 

The candidate will contribute to our undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA) programs through teaching and course development, service and leadership within the program, and mentoring and supervision of students to facilitate junior scholars and diversify the field. Courses to teach may include; RTA 213 - Production: Introduction to Multi-Camera, RTA 313 - Production: Intermediate Multi-camera, , RTA 969- Television Technical Producing. 

The candidate will possess a track record of hands-on video-based television production and/or technical production experience with demonstrated skills in a multi-camera production. Experience in single-camera production techniques is also an asset. 

We are seeking a skilled video-based production person with experience in broadcast  and/or live event multi-camera video/television production. The successful candidate will possess a substantial record of hands-on media production practice with an in-depth understanding of the past, present, and emerging production technologies, and their application in modes of production across various media platforms. 

Candidates must have teaching experience and at least five years of recent professional practice in video-based broadcast production. A Master’s degree in Communications or Media Production is required. In some circumstances, where professional experience is uniquely outstanding, a  BA / BFA in Media or a related field may be considered. 

In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of: 

  • a track record of teaching at the college or university level, or of delivery of professional training in media production; 
  • practical professional experience in video/television production focused on the creative and technical aspects of multi- and single-camera production, and/or live event television directing; 
  • a strong foundational understanding of video for broadcast television and IP-based production;
  • experience in traditional and innovative storytelling and distribution/dissemination across various media platforms;
  • experience working as a leader focused on technical innovation & development in media production;
  • a broad knowledge of best practices, industry challenges, and trends in production and media;
  • capacity to critically reflect on and communicate about production practices, issues and trends; 
  • an ability to engage and enthuse students through teaching;
  • a commitment to student well-being and making learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; 
  • a commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to teaching and service activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
  • an ability to contribute to the life of the RTA School of Media and the University through collegial service.

Note: Limited Term Faculty appointments at Ryerson University may not exceed a combined total of four years. Applicants with prior Ryerson LTF appointments need to consider this limitation, as it may render them ineligible to apply.

RTA School of Media
