The UCLA Department of Musicology invites applications for a part-time lecturer position as Director of the UCLA Early Music Ensemble in Fall, Winter and Spring quarters of the 2019-20 academic year. Salary commensurate with applicant qualifications and experience.

The UCLA Early Music Ensemble looks at and beyond the Western European canon and its dominant practices: recent programs have explored Appalachian roots music, the influence of prosody on musical rhythm (ranging from Renaissance villancicos to hip hop), the music of Bach’s lesser-known contemporaries, European musical imaginings of the “New World;” etc. Professional and amateur music-making are integrated through a collaborative, communitarian leadership ethic.

conceiving and researching concert programs based on available personnel (normally 3/yr)

    coaching and leading concerts

    supervision of a TA

organizing occasional guest artists for workshops

coordinating with the School of Music's Instrument Curator on instrument rental, keyboard moving/ tuning, and development of the collection

Successful applicants should demonstrate experience in ensemble leadership in pre-1800 repertories of Western music, as well as a commitment to amateur, collective, and community-based music-making practices. Candidates should have a Master’s degree or its professional equivalent in academic experience.

The application deadline is June 15, 2019 with an anticipated appointment date of July 1, 2019.
