DESCRIPTION

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach Electrical Engineering or Computer Science courses should an opening arise. These are not tenure‐track positions – selected candidates will hold the title of Lecturer. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Positions typically range from 25% to 33% time in a given semester. Due to budget restrictions, no funding is available for visa or relocation expenses.

In addition to lecturing responsibilities, general duties for these positions include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g. syllabus) and maintaining a course website.

Basic qualifications: The minimum qualification required to be considered an applicant for the position is an advanced degree or enrolled in an advanced degree program.

Additional qualifications: Master’s degree (or equivalent international degree) at the time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications: Experience teaching courses in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, particularly courses with 200+ students. Experience managing large course staffs.

Salary is based on degree, previous college level teaching experience, and equity within the department; the starting level is approximately $65,065 annually (full‐time rate) for Electrical Engineering lecturers, and $87,505 for Computer Science lecturers.

The Department is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching. UC Berkeley has an excellent benefits package as well as a number of policies and programs to support employees as they balance work and family, if applicable.

To apply, please go to the following link: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF02050. Applicants should submit their most recently updated curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching experience and qualifications (including teaching evaluations, if available), and names and email addresses of three references. The teaching statement must include information on the course(s) the applicant is qualified to teach (after reviewing our list of courses) in order for the Department to properly assess the application. A list of courses offered by the Department is available at: http://guide.berkeley.edu/courses/el_eng/(for Electrical Engineering) and http://guide.berkeley.edu/courses/compsci/ (for Computer Science). Courses of particular interest in the Computer Science division include CS 10, 88, 169 and 186 as well as Data 8, 100, and 102. If the applicant wishes to, they may also submit a cover letter or statement of contributions to diversity (a statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to diversity through teaching or other related areas), but are not required to do so.

We will only contact your references if you are a finalist for the position and we will seek your permission before doing so. All letters will be treated as confidential per the University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential recommenders, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality: http://apo.berkeley.edu/evalltr.html prior to submission of letters.

The positing will remain open until February 1, 2020 to accommodate upcoming Department course needs. Appointments for the fall semester are usually reviewed in April, for the spring semester in October. The pool will close on February 1, 2020; if you would like to continue to be considered after that time, you will need to submit a new application. Please note: The use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists. See the review date specified in AP Recruit to learn whether the Department is currently reviewing applications for a specific position. If there is no future review date specified, your application may not be considered at this time.
