PhD-Fellowship in Dance University of Stavanger Faculty of Performing Arts Norway

PhD-Fellowship in Dance

Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a research fellowship in dance.

This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development leading to a doctoral degree.

The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively, or four years with both research and 25% compulsory duties. This will be clarified in the recruitment process. The position is vacant from Autumn 2019.

The project is tied to the Faculty of Performing Arts, and will be part of the Group for Artistic Research.

Research theme is dance and social engagement.

Positioning the performing arts within social contexts opens up the potential for new knowledge about how arts-based practices interact with relevant social/cultural challenges. Although various disciplines/methodologies have looked at dance-practices – from phenomenology to pedagogy, performance and artistic research – few have situated artistic practices within specific contexts, and scrutinized the potential for transferability between the arts and the large array of societal challenges facing our cities/environments today.

Project proposal

Based on a detailed project description (approximately 10 pages), the applicant needs to formulate an artistic research project with a clear social/cultural context. A project proposal template can be found here.

We invites applicants who are interested in dance and its relation to society. Relevant themes may be mediation, integration, audience development, community work, technological innovation, and/or knowledge exchange. Specific sub-fields can be education, pedagogy, artistic research/practice-based research, health/dance therapy, cultural politics/sociology, and/or sustainability/the green shift.

Qualification requirements

The applicant should be able to document prior acknowledged artistic research of a certain scope, and have a five-year master degree (3+2) preferably acquired recently; or possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the Univeristy of Stavanger both the grade for your master’s thesis and the weighted average grade of your master’s degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade.

Applicants with an education from an institution with a different grade scale than A-F should attach a confirmed conversion scale that shows how the grades can be compared with the Norwegian A-F scale.

In assessing the applications, emphasis will be placed on:

  • that the applicant needs to have a keen interest in transdisciplinary work
  • that the applicants have personal ambitions towards developing high level dance projects, as well as be capable of drawing lines between own practice and dance as social engagement.
  • is motivated and has the potential for research within the field
  • can work independently and in a team, be innovative and creative
  • is structured and has a high capacity for work
  • a good command of both oral and written English
