Position description

The Department of English offers new Ph.D.s from the UC Davis English Department the opportunity to apply for one-year appointments as Recent Ph.D. Lecturers. This program is housed entirely within the English Department, and Recent Ph.D. Lecturers will teach English courses exclusively.

The primary purpose of these appointments is to help new Ph.D.s become more competitive in the job market by gaining additional teaching experience in literature courses and additional time to convert a dissertation into a book or to publish articles. The number of positions and the percentage of time offered for next year will depend upon funding and the number of courses available. These Recent Ph.D. Lecturer appointments are for one year only.

Eligibility and Application Procedure

To be eligible for appointment, you must file your dissertation with Graduate Studies by September 10, 2021, and you must have a strong record of teaching in English literature courses, including English 3.

The application procedure is as follows:

a. Submit a letter of application, indicating in your opening paragraph that you wish to be considered for an appointment beginning in fall quarter 2021. Also indicate in your opening paragraph when you filed, or plan to file, your dissertation.
Your letter should be no more than two pages and should include information about your teaching experiences and goals. It should indicate which fields of literature and/or undergraduate ENL courses you are most qualified to teach. If you have had experience lecturing for larger audiences (for example, as a TA in a literature course or as a presenter at a conference), please let us know that as well.
b. Include with your letter of application a CV, the name of your dissertation adviser, and selected teaching materials (these might include sample syllabi - - no more than two -- reading and paper assignments, exams, and handouts. Members of the selection committee will have your teaching observations and evaluations on hand, so you don't need to supply them.
