Australian Research Council (ARC) funded PhD on Reuse Organisations, Land Use Planning, and the Circular EconomyJob no.: 611369 Faculty / Portfolio: Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture (MADA) Location: Caulfield campus Principal Supervisor: Professor Carl Grodach Associate Supervisors: Dr Julian Yates Employment Type: Full-time Remuneration: The successful applicant will receive a tax-free living allowance of $29,000 per annum for 3.3 years with additional research and conference travel support. The Opportunity The PhD will contribute to a research project funded by the Australian Research Council called Measuring the benefits of reuse in the circular economy. This project is led by Associate Professor Ruth Lane, Dr Julian Yates, and Professor Carl Grodach in partnership with Charitable Recycling Australia, Sustainability Victoria, Qld Dept of Environment and Science and Green Industries SA. The project will advance understanding of reuse commodity chains, their societal benefits and contributions to a more sustainable circular economy. Drawing on case study research with charitable and community reuse organisations, factors facilitating or inhibiting reuse will be identified, and rigorous methods developed for assessing the benefits of reuse organisations in terms of quantities of materials processed, employment, skills development and contributions to regional economic development. Research outputs will provide a sound evidence base for government policy and decision-making and strengthen conceptual understanding of drivers and enablers of reuse and links with broader economic activities. The successful PhD candidate will study under the supervision of Professor Grodach and Dr Yates with input from Associate Professor. Lane. Their project will study the workplace characteristics and land use requirements of reuse organisations and eco-industrial precincts that co-locate repair, recycling, reuse, and manufacturing facilities. Reuse organisations of various types comprise a potentially important yet overlooked component of the urban industrial base in Australian cities. They may also contribute to addressing fundamental problems of current systems of production and consumption that contribute to climate instability and rising inequality. The final project parameters will be determined by the student in consultation with their supervisors. Candidate Requirements
