(salary level TV-L E13, 65%)
in the field of British literary and cultural studies


This fixed-term post is part of the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) “Law and Literature”, funded by the German Research Foundation. The at the part-time level of 65%, the position pays approximately 33,000 Euros per year before tax. Currently, the regular working time for full (100%) employment is 39 hours and 50 minutes per week. The post will begin at the earliest possible date and will run for a period of three and a half years. 



The selected candidate will participate in the SFB project "The Market and Literature", which is a collaboration between scholars from literature, antitrust law, and economics. The dissertation will be situated in English literary and cultural studies and supervised by literary scholar Dr Caroline Kögler (co-supervision: antitrust lawyer Prof Petra Pohlmann). “The Market and Literature” deals with the special status of books in German antitrust law (fixed book prices) and compares surrounding issues with the situation in the UK, particularly with debates regarding the Net Book Agreement.



Responsibilities

  • The PhD research will focus primarily on the British context, especially on constructions and representations of “literature”—its values, social functions etc.—and the relationship between the market and literature from 1997, which saw the abolition of the Net Book Agreement. Research materials are predominantly literary texts but also public and political debates as well as, where appropriate, legal texts. Connecting the research to current issues (such as postcoloniality or Brexit) is possible.
  • In addition to writing the dissertation, the chosen candidate will contribute to the overall research of the project “The Market and Literature” and support its collaboration with other projects of the SFB “Law and Literature”. They will also collaborate with other PhD students.


Qualifications

  • An MA (or equivalent; with excellent grades) in the field of literary and/or cultural studies with a focus on British and/or Anglophone British literature and contemporary culture, preferably including legal and/or economic issues.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary work in the field of literature, the market and/or law is strongly desired.
  • The ability to research independently and at a high level, so as to complete the PhD within the given time frame of three and a half years.
