Trapholt is museum for art, crafts, design and furniture design. The project shall contribute to Trapholt’s research in furniture design. Information on Trapholt:

Information on the Department of Design and Communication:

For many designers, the chair is the ultimate design-task because it combines aesthetic, functional and technological challenges. It is both sculpture and function in one. However, the role of design in society is changing these years in relation to both function and meaning, which necessitates a new approach to the classic selection criteria of museum collections (e.g. form and function). Instead it is relevant to discuss what new conditions and new roles modern furniture design is facing.

The purpose of this project is to contribute to the development and formulation of a new collection and exhibition policy for Trapholt, in order to identify design as contemporary markers for both reflecting and creating our contemporary society.

A new methodology for collecting will ensure Trapholt’s research and collection of Danish furniture design, based on concrete and significant contemporary phenomena. The chronological historical collection will be activated, since topics that arise in our present days may very well have been mentioned previously by designers.
The project shall uncover Trapholt’s former conditions and ambitions for furniture and design hybrids, as well as a survey of design museums’ previous and current ideal collection methods will reveal global collection trends – thus contributing to a new collection policy for Trapholt.

In addition to research, the candidate is expected to teach at SDU Kolding's design culture programs as well as take part in a review of Trapholt's chair collection and contribute to the development of a new research and collection. Therefore, the preferred candidate is expected to have research-based knowledge of Danish furniture design in the 21st century and should be able to document PhD level research in design culture and design history as well as demonstrating experience from research dissemination.

Applicants shall hand in a 5-page suggestion for a research plan for the project.
