Overview

The Judith Neilson Chair and Post-doctoral Fellow in Contemporary Art were established at UNSW as a result of a gift to the university by the philanthropist and collector of Chinese contemporary art, Judith Neilson AM. Since taking up their posts in 2018, the inaugural Judith Neilson Chair and Judith Neilson Post-Doctoral Fellow in Contemporary Art have begun to establish an internationally recognised platform for research into contemporary art/visual cultures with a particular focus on East Asia and related diasporic communities. That platform supports innovative research-led teaching and learning, public engagement, and impact outside the university sector. Significant achievements thus far include the establishment of the:

  • Peer reviewed book series, Contemporary East Asian Visual Cultures, Societies and Politics (Palgrave Macmillan);
  • UNSW undergraduate programme, Contemporary East Asian Art: Theories and Practices;
  • Public seminar series, School of Art and Design with the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney Present;
  • Contemporary East Asian Visual Cultures international research network; and
  • International “post-West” research symposium series, Jointly organised by the University of Maryland and UNSW, Sydney.

Scholarly engagement with the arts/visual cultures of East Asia and related diasporic communities is crucial to an understanding of contemporary culture in the global context. It also informs Australia’s strategic cultural partnerships regionally and internationally.
