The School of Psychology is one of the largest and most prestigious schools in Australia. The School is located in the Faculty of Science and has approximately 50 full time members of academic staff, 15 general staff and an operating budget of over $12M. 

The School administers 3 and 4 year undergraduate professional degrees (BPyschSc and BPsych) as well as offering undergraduate courses that are available to students in many of the degree programs offered by the University. Undergraduate enrolments are over 1000 EFTSLs including approximately 70 Honours students. At the postgraduate level, the School offers bridging UG, PhD and MSc degrees as well as 2-year professional Masters degrees and combined PhD/Masters degrees in Clinical and Forensic Psychology. Approximately 60 students are enrolled in the professional Masters programs and over 100 in postgraduate research programs. The School is very active in research, with most staff holding external research funding. The School has extensive laboratory facilities for both research and teaching and receives almost $15M per annum in competitive research funding. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for running a project aimed at designing a gamified cognitive training intervention to prevent adolescent mental health problems. Specifically, the role is to work on a Discovery Project awarded to Dr Schweizer, Professor Blakemore (University of Cambridge), Professor Fox (University of Oxford) and Dr Raffe (University of Technology Sydney) entitled “Improving Emotion Regulation with a Gamified Cognitive Training Program to Prevent Emotional Disorders in Adolescence”, in accordance with the Funding Agreement with the National Health and Medical Research Council.


About the role

  • $95k - $102k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed term – 23 months with a potential for extension
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Postdoctoral Fellow reports to Dr Schweizer and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Design and conduct experimental studies in the lab and schools to validate intervention components.
  • Liaise with game software developers in the initial phase of the study to pilot test early iterations of the intervention.
  • Work closely with teachers and parents to recruit and test adolescents during the evaluation phase.
  • Liaise with national and international collaborators to ensure satisfactory project progression.
  • Program experimental tasks using Matlab, Gorilla, or other languages that can be used for online tasks.
  • Perform other support tasks associated with general laboratory and school-based experimentation, including data analyses, literature searches, grant application and ethics approval.
  • Write scientific communications intended for publication in refereed journals.
  • Present research results at national and international conferences.
  • In consultation with Dr Schweizer, assist and supervise graduate, PhD and honours-level students working on the project.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • PhD (or equivalent) in Psychology (preferred specialisation: experimental, clinical or developmental);
  • Affective, Cognitive, Clinical or Developmental Neuroscience or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated strong project and data management skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent data analytic and academic writing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing manuscripts for publication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that will allow the Postdoctoral Fellow to collaborate with relevant stakeholders (adolescents, parents, teachers, collaborators, students).
  • Demonstrated experience working with young people.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising PhD and honour students.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, programming and running experimental psychology studies.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
