Postdoctoral Instructor in Electronic Music

The Department of Music at the University of Chicago invites applications for a position as Postdoctoral Instructor in Electronic Music during the 2021-22 academic year. The selected candidate will teach two courses during the year in the CHIME Electronic Music Studio, including Music 266/366: Composing with Sound, and a second course designed for graduate students in composition and in the University’s MAPH program. The selected candidate will also teach composition lessons to two graduate students per quarter and will work with students on coding and other issues related to their pieces and their PhD minor field papers.

The selected candidate will also be responsible for coordinating and organizing the annual CHIME festival of electronic music in late winter (including publicity, technical advice, set-up/take-down, and recording for the performances) and will oversee the equipment in the CHIME Studio, including maintenance, upgrade recommendations, and loaning equipment to students for temporary use.

The Department prides itself on its integrative approach to music across media and across subdisciplines; thus a successive candidate should show evidence for participation in compositional and Departmental life.

The position’s start date is October 1, 2021 with appointment for one year. Reappointment possible depending on departmental need and successful review. Regular presence on campus throughout the academic year (1 October 2021-early June 2022, not counting University break periods) is required.


Doctorate (DMA or PhD) in Music, Music Technology, or an equivalent credential. Preferred qualifications include: outstanding record of teaching at the collegiate level; expert-level fluency with Electronic Music techniques; excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in one of the following three audio programming languages is required: Max/MSP, SuperCollider, or PureData.
