Position description

The University of California, Irvine is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar full time to work on the How Ethnic Studies Pedagogy Reduces Racial Inequality: Identifying Effective Pedagogy and Efforts to Promote It project in the School of Education. The postdoctoral scholar will support a multi-year William T. Grant funded project that aims to systematically explore the scale-up of K-12 ethnic studies courses, pedagogy used in these courses, ethnic studies teacher professional development and learning communities, and program impacts across a variety of metrics. Salary and rank within the Postdoctoral Scholar series commensurate with experience. The appointment is for one year, with possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding. Anticipated start date is August 15, 2022.

Responsibilities: The postdoctoral scholar will work on a number of sub-projects related to examining K-12 Ethnic Studies Pedagogy and the Impacts of the course during Program Scale-Up. Responsibilities include collaborating with faculty PI and co-PIs on the project; assisting with project management, including communication with district partners; conducting teacher and student interviews and/or focus groups; coding qualitative data; analyzing mixed-methods data with the research team; engaging in co-design of interviews and surveys; publishing and presenting findings; writing funding proposals to seek additional external support; consulting with and mentoring teams of graduate and undergraduate students; managing communication, training sessions, and dissemination of research results; and coordinating the personnel and facilities within the Ethnic Studies Pedagogy project team.

Requirements:Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Education, Ethnic Studies, or a related field; broad expertise in research and evaluation of educational programs and policies using rigorous qualitative and/or mixed methods designs; particular expertise on topics related to critical and/or ethnic studies pedagogies, ethnic studies teacher preparation, and student success; broad knowledge of qualitative research design; experience with interviews and classroom observations; experience coding and preparing qualitative data for analysis, including cleaning, coding, and managing data; successful experience in development of survey measures; advanced expertise in academic writing and editing for peer-reviewed scholarly articles; successful experience in writing human subjects protocols; demonstrated ability to work well with others, including both receiving direction and providing direction; and expertise in collaborating with school district staff, teachers, and students and leading research initiatives and teams.
