Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Semitic languages Uppsala University, SWEDESD - The Swedish International Centre of Education for Sustainable Development Sweden

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Semitic languages

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.

Subject area: Semitic languages, their philology, linguistics and literature have been studied and researched for over 400 years in Uppsala. Current research and teaching concentrates mostly on Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic/Syriac as well as Assyriology. The diversity of the field of Semitic Languages studied in Uppsala at present means that the postdoctoral research fellow will be part of the leading hub for research and education in the subject in Sweden.

Work duties: The vacancy is for a research position within the subject area Semitic Languages and includes teaching and supervision at different levels. Some administrative duties are also part of the job. As a researcher/teacher the successful applicant in addition to research and teaching will be expected to:

  • take part in research planning and pedagogical development

  • plan, lead and participate in seminars, workshops and conferences

  • remain apprised of advances within the subject area

  • actively seek external research funding

Period of employment: Employment as a postdoctoral research fellow may be held for a maximum of four years.

Qualifications: In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, to qualify for employment as a postdoctoral research fellow applicants must hold a doctoral degree or must have achieved scientific expertise at an equivalent level. Primary consideration should be given to those who received their doctorate no more than seven years prior to the application deadline.

Uppsala University employment regulations give proficiency in teaching as a requirement for employment as a postdoctoral research fellow. Applicants should have completed five weeks of relevant university level teacher-training courses or be adjudged to have an equivalent level of knowledge and skills.

Uppsala University employment regulations also state as a requirement for teachers that they have the personal qualities needed to carry out such work well.

The ability to teach in Swedish or English is also a requirement.

Assessment criteria: When selecting qualified applicants, special emphasis is to be placed upon academic proficiency. When assessing academic proficiency, great emphasis is given to research experience within the fields of Semitic philology, linguistics or literature. Documented academic proficiency in more than one Semitic language is an advantage.

Pedagogical proficiency is also of significance. Pedagogical proficiency refers to educational and teaching experience/qualifications and it is primarily pedagogical quality which will be taken into consideration. As much care will be given to testing pedagogical proficiency as will be given to testing academic proficiency.

In addition, special emphasis will be placed upon the applicants’ perceived ability to contribute to future developments within both research and education.

Due to the nature of the position, the applicants’ scientific and pedagogical experience/qualifications will be evaluated mostly qualitatively. Their scope, breadth and depth will also be a determining factor. On the other hand, an applicant’s quantitative advantages, i.e. that he/she has been doing relevant work for a long time, will not be of decisive importance. All experience/qualifications are to be documented so that both quality and quantity can be evaluated.

In order to fill this position, the university will first produce an overall qualitative assessment of the applicant’s skills and proficiency. After this, the university will decide upon the applicant who has the best perceived ability to carry out and further develop the work to be done and can contribute to the positive advancement of the field of studies.

Other factors: Personal circumstances, such as parental leave, which may be credited to the applicant should be included when listing experience/qualifications. Parental leave, periods of part-time work due to caring for sick children, trade union work, military service and the like will be counted as work experience.

Application procedure: Your complete application is to be submitted via the Uppsala University recruitment system and is to include:

  • List of appendices

  • Account of academic qualifications

  • Account of teaching qualifications
