Postdoctoral Researcher in Children and Language Mixing: Developmental, Psycholinguistic and Sociolinguistic Aspects
Utrecht University
Netherlands

 Postdoctoral Researcher in ‘Children and Language Mixing: Developmental, Psycholinguistic and Sociolinguistic Aspects (CALM)’ (0.75 - 0.8 FTE, 42 months)

Job description

The Department of Education and Pedagogical Science has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Researcher on the project Children and Language Mixing: developmental, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic aspects (CALM).

An intriguing phenomenon in the field of bilingualism is language mixing, the alternating of languages in the same episode of speech production. The aim of CALM is to investigate the effects of parental language mixing on children’s language development and to develop an innovative, comprehensive model of children’s own mixing. Within CALM, the postdoctoral project focuses on children with a congenital language disorder (Developmental Language Disorder). Children with DLD are of specific interest because they will amplify any effects of mixed input and highlight the role of linguistics and cognitive factors in children’s mixing behaviour. The postdoctoral project has two objectives: 1) identify the impact of DLD on the relation between mixed language input and children’s language development; and 2) elucidate the effect of DLD on children's language mixing behaviour. The focus will be on preschool children, aged 3-5 years. Ecologically valid home recordings will be collected and analyzed, using Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA). In addition, questionnaires and experimental data will be obtained.

CALM has been funded by an NWO Vici Grant. We offer you a position within a larger research team in which you will collaborate with the principle investigator, two PhD Researchers, a Fieldwork Coordinator and Research Assistants.

Qualifications

You have:

  • a PhD in Linguistics, Pedagogical Sciences, Developmental Psychology, or a closely related field;
  • affinity with language disorders and bilingual language development;
  • the ability to initiate, develop, and deliver high quality research;
  • experience with different statistical techniques;
  • good writing skills, reflected in published articles in leading peer-reviewed international citation indexed journals in the field;
  • the ability or potential to generate external research funding;
  • excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • excellent skills in English and you are preferably fluent in Dutch.

Offer

We offer a temporary position (0.75 - 0.8 FTE) for one year. We also provide an attractive working environment and a vibrant research climate. Upon a positive performance the appointment will be extended with a period of 30 months. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €2,790 to €4,402 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
