Department Summary

The Department of Education Studies (EDST) offers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs to a diverse student body. Our licensure and degree programs prepare professionals to use the best of research-based practices to teach children and adult learners. For undergraduates who are interested in becoming an elementary or secondary teacher, EDST offers the Educational Foundations BA/BS and Secondary Certificate program pathways to achieve the goal of becoming a teacher. Our UOTeach Curriculum and Teaching degree is the teacher licensure master's program for initial licensure in both Elementary Multiple Subjects and Middle/High School Education. The faculty in the Department of Education Studies is diverse in terms of research interests and specializations, with award recognition for scholarship, teaching, and service. Our programs are known for a strong focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

 

Position Summary

The Department of Education Studies is seeking qualified applicants with expertise in education and K-12 teaching for its open Pro Tem Instructor/Lecturer pool for undergraduate and graduate courses.

 

Potential Undergraduate course subjects may include:

• History of Public Education

• Foundations of Education

• Curriculum and Instruction

• Childhood and Adolescent Studies

• Education Technology

• Literacy

• Art Education

 

Potential Graduate course subjects may include:

• Methods in Elementary or Secondary Math

• Methods in Elementary or Secondary Science

• Methods in Secondary World Languages

• Methods in Secondary Language Arts

• Methods in Secondary Social Studies

• Childhood and Adolescent Studies

• Classroom Communities (Motivation and Management)

• Education Technology

• Literacy

• English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

 

Some courses are offered in the evenings.

 

Minimum Requirements

Undergraduate Course Subjects:

• MA or MS or equivalent graduate-level work in Curriculum and Instruction, Teacher Education, or other research/education-related area

• Relevant subject matter expertise (childhood and adolescent studies, educational technology, literacy and reading instruction, art education)

• K-12 teaching experience in relevant subject area for course subjects Literacy and Arts Education (integrated or stand-alone instruction)

 

Graduate Course Subjects:

• MA or MS or equivalent graduate-level work in Curriculum and Instruction, Teacher Education, or relevant subject area (Mathematics, Science, World Language, English, History/Geography/Political Science/Other Social Studies related field, Childhood and Adolescent Studies, Technology, Literacy, or English Language Learning) (PhD preferred)

• Extensive K-12 teaching experience in elementary or secondary subject area (minimum of 5 years of classroom instruction in content area or equivalent professional instructional position): Mathematics, Science, World Language, English, History/Geography/Political Science/Other Social Studies related field, Childhood and Adolescent Studies, Technology, Literacy, or English Language Learning (ESOL)

• Evidence of public K-12 license (inactive is acceptable) or public K-12 instructional professional experience in appropriate level subject area

• Experience with pre-service teacher education (ex. cooperating teacher, university supervisor, professional development)

• Demonstrable background in public education issues related to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic inequities, English language learners, gender and sexual orientation

• Evidence of curriculum and pedagogy addressing diversity in the classroom

 

Professional Competencies

• Commitment to and knowledge of diversity issues and trends generally

• Commitment to and knowledge of gender and sexuality diversity issues and trends

 

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate Course Subjects:

• K-12 teaching experience

• Successful experience as a college level instructor

• Familiarity with teacher education curriculum and regulations

• PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, Teacher Education, or other research/education-related area

 

Graduate Course Subjects:

• PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, Teacher Education, or relevant subject area (Mathematics, Science, World Language, English, History/Geography/Political Science/Other Social Studies related field, Childhood and Adolescent Studies, Technology, Literacy, or ESOL) PhD required for Lecturer rank.

• Successful experience in professional development with K-12 teachers

• Extensive knowledge of teacher education curriculum and standards related to instructional subject area
