The field of the position based at the University of the Arts is Artistic Research. The position focuses on the promotion of artistic research and doctoral education. Please read the call for applications


The field of the position based at the University of Helsinki is Art Studies. The discipline focuses on the theories and methods of art studies, inter-artistic issues and the relationship between the arts and society. The appointee is expected to consolidate and promote research and instruction in the arts as well as public engagement. The appointee must provide instruction related to his or her research, supervise master’s and other theses and the work of postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, lead research projects and promote the social impact of research results in the field. The breadth of the applicants’ theoretical knowledge will be considered an asset, as will research experience relating to various art forms.


The professor or assistant/associate professor of art studies will work at the Faculty of Arts, Department of Philosophy, History and Art Studies of the University of Helsinki. The appointee’s duties will include teaching, primarily in the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Art Studies as well as the Doctoral Programme in Philosophy, Arts and Society. The relevant group of disciplines includes comparative literature, aesthetics, musicology and theatre studies as well as film and television studies. The appointee must cooperate with researchers and teachers at the University of the Arts Helsinki.



The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term
associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his or her qualifications

An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system
shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have
the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant/associate
professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career
through publications and other means.


An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly
qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to
provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In
addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of
research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills
necessary to serve as academic leaders.


When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to both scholarly and
teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scientific publications and other research
results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research
experience as well as international elected positions. When considering the teaching qualifications of each applicant, attention will be focused on teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s leadership and interaction skills as well as activity in the academic community will also be taken into account.


To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills.
If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he/she is expected to acquire moderate

Annual gross salary for an assistant/associate professor amounts to 50,000 - 68,500 euros and for full professor to 64,000 - 96,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
