Along with the Academy of Music and Drama, the new academy HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design together form Scandinavia’s biggest Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, offering a unique breadth in artistic education and research. The position provides an opportunity to develop and strengthen the academy's teaching and research together with colleagues and offers a broad network with many opportunities for various collaborations and knowledge exchanges. The position includes time for skills development and the possibility to apply for research time.

The position is based at HDK-Valand Steneby in Dals Långed, 170km north of Gothenburg in the region of Dalsland. Steneby is an international culture and education centre where we run material-based design and craft educations.

Subject Areas

Our three bachelor level programmes are Metal Art, Wood Oriented Furniture Design and Textile-Body-Space. At postgraduate level, we offer an MFA in Applied Arts and Design, with three specializations that correspond to the bachelor programmes. Metal Art and Wood Oriented Furniture Design are both taught in English. HDK-Valand also offers research education in design.

Metal Art

The bachelor education in Metal Art includes courses in metal, public art, core artistic skills, theory and history. Students learn to apply methods of artistic inquiry in relation to technical and material possibilities through teaching that is centered around the project process. Through lectures, engagements with guest teachers, workshops and study visits, students acquire the necessary skills to situate their practice within social, historical and theoretical contexts. Students are encouraged to participate in national and international exchanges, competitions, and exhibitions that set the foundation for future professional networks.

Craft with a specialization in Metal Art

Role description

You will be part of the team at the Design and Crafts Steneby Unit. The primary tasks include teaching, examination and development of the BA in Metal art and MFA in Applied Art and Design. You will work in close collaboration with colleagues to conduct and develop education. The teacher team includes professors, senior lecturers, adjuncts and technicians.

You are expected to have broad knowledge and experience of higher education, as well as extensive knowledge of artistic approaches and knowledge production within the subject area. You will support exchange of knowledge and skills in education, research and artistic approaches at HDK-Valand in national and international contexts. We particularly encourage applicants with a focus on social practice, sustainability and craft innovation who can contribute to subject development at the unit.

The work assignments include:

  • Driving the strategic development of the subject of Metal Art at HDK-Valand Steneby
  • Promoting the continued development of “complete environments” through the integration of knowledge from artistic practice and/or research
  • Course and programme development, teaching, and conducting examinations at BA and MFA level.
  • Promoting students’ professional development through introduction of professional skills and contacts in the field of metal art.
  • Supervising students' writing in support of their practice.
  • Driving the development work with the Faculty of Arts' vision and actively participate in the overall development of HDK-Valand Steneby.
  • Developing the school’s international network

The position also involves active participation in activities across Steneby and the HDK-Valand. You will be expected to participate in regular meetings at the unit and department. In collaboration with the unit manager, you will share responsibility for subject development and for the relevance of the education in relation to society at large.

Eligibility

In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, chapter 4, section 4:3, an individual is eligible for employment as a professor at an artistic institution if he/she has demonstrated both artistic and educational ability.

Assessment criteria

Artistic and pedagogical abilities will carry equal weight.

Artistic Ability

A particular emphasis will be placed on the following criteria in assessing the candidate’s artistic abilities:

  • International visibility and active participation in international professional networks within the field of metal art
  • Documented experience of artistic development work and/or research
  • Broad knowledge of the craft field at an international level and the ability to position one’s own practice within the broader social, political and artistic contexts in craft
  • The ability to develop partnerships for the institution or faculty

Teaching Ability

A particular emphasis is placed on teaching skills and the ability to develop education together with colleagues, and in relation to society at large according to the following criteria:

  • Documented experience of conducting and leading development work in higher education, including curriculum development, teaching and examination.
  • Documented experience of teaching at university level
  • An innovative approach to teaching in the craft field
  • An ability to communicate knowledge and integrate contemporary issues relating to metal art in teaching
  • An ability to integrate developments in the field of professional practice and/or research in teaching
  • Experience of teaching in cross-cultural environments

Other Criteria

  • Artistic practice with a focus on research, social practice, sustainability or craft innovation
  • Experience of leading research projects and obtaining external funding
  • The ability to contribute to change processes in the unit and institution
  • Very good written and spoken knowledge of English
  • Documented administrative, organization and collaboration skills

The Appointments Procedure for teachers at the University of Gothenburg includes a requirement that the successful applicant must have completed courses in teaching and learning in higher education amounting to 15 higher education credits, or otherwise have acquired equivalent knowledge no later than within three years from the date of the initial appointment.

We will conduct an overall assessment and employ the candidate who is considered to possess the best prerequisites for implementing and developing the aforementioned tasks. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability.
