Professor of Ancient Egyptian Religion Radboud University Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Netherlands

Professor of Ancient Egyptian Religion (by special appointment) (0.2 FTE)

Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies
Vacancy number: 21.03.19
Application deadline: 22 April 2019

Responsibilities

Due to the approaching departure of the current chair holder, the board of the Jozef M.A. Janssen Foundation invites applications for the endowed chair of Ancient Egyptian Religion. This chair was established in 1987 for the study of the ‘History of the Antique Religions, particularly that of Ancient Egypt' at the University of Nijmegen, as Radboud University was then called. In recent years, the chair holder closely collaborated with the Institute of Eastern Christian Studies (IECS/IVOC), which is based at the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, linking the founding discipline of the Chair, i.e. Egyptian religions, with the study of the Coptic language and the history and culture of Coptic Christianity. For both fields, the chair holder cooperates with scholars from the Faculty of Arts.
It is this double focus on both ancient religions/Egyptian religions and the Coptic tradition that the board of the foundation would like to see continued in the years to come. Suitable candidates who work in related fields of ancient religious history will also be considered.

The board of the Jozef M.A. Janssen Foundation is therefore looking for a candidate who:

  • will contribute to the Faculty’s teaching and research in the field of ancient religions, particularly Egyptian religions;
  • will contribute to the Faculty’s teaching and research in the field of Coptic language and cultural history or in the other languages of ancient Egypt;
  • will also want to initiate and supervise PhD research in one or more of these areas;
  • will be willing to contribute to the further development of the library collection in this field;
  • will want to contribute to activities organised in these areas in Nijmegen, by the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, IVOC and the Faculty of Arts.

Work environment

The Faculty of Philosophy, Theology en Religious Studies has approximately 140 staff and 10 chair groups, providing courses to some 700 students. Depending on your expertise, you will be assigned to the chair group of either Philosophy or Religious Studies. You will work together with colleagues from various disciplines, in teaching, at our faculty’s research institute, and through interfaculty collaboration. The chair groups have both teaching and research remits.

The Faculty has an inspiring academic climate. We continuously seek to innovate our socially relevant domain-specific and interdisciplinary education and research programmes. Responsibility, solidarity, care and commitment are values that characterise the Faculty’s culture.

What we expect from you

  • an excellent track record in both teaching and research in one of the areas mentioned above;
  • proven experience in supervising/co-supervising PhD candidates;
  • a good international network in those areas of research and a willingness to use that network for the benefit of students and colleagues in Nijmegen;
  • to regularly come to Nijmegen (one day a week in term time; equivalents of that in longer concentrated periods are open to discussion).

What we have to offer

  • employment: 0.2 FTE;
  • this is an unpaid position. The Faculty will make a budget available for expenses incurred;
  • duration of the contract: 3 years with possibility of extension with 5 years;
  • classification in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO): Professor, Level 2.
