The Faculty of Education has several research environments related to visualisation and learning in the STEM field. The Department of Education, Communication and Learning has a research area in Learning and Information Technology that addresses questions about how the digitalisation transforms the conditions for education and development of professional expertise. The Learning and Information Technology group is committed to offering a research-based view of the relationships between digital technology and learning in a range of knowledge domains. At the Department of Pedagogical, Curricular and Professional Studies, there are several research groups working in Science, Technology and Mathematics Education including research in education within the framework of museums and other exhibitions. The professor is expected to interact broadly with these environments and with related environments at the IT faculty and Chalmers University of Technology and to collaborate with Stanford University. Placement of the professorship at the Department of Education, Communication and Learning or the Department of Pedagogical, Curricular and Professional Studies will be determined in consultation with the holder of the position and management of the two departments in connection with the start date and to plan for how the work should be conducted.

Subject area description

Education, as a subject, is focused on processes, both formal and informal, through which individuals are formed and changed within social, cultural and historical contexts. It includes various dimensions of childhood, education, teaching, learning and other processes.

Job description

The position specialises in digitalisation through visualisation and artificial intelligence (AI) linked to learning in mathematics, natural sciences and technology, with a commission at Universeum and its environments for formal and informal learning. The position is fully funded for at least five years within the framework of an agreement between the foundation Stiftelsen Korsvägen and the University of Gothenburg. A workplace will be prepared at both Universeum and the Faculty of Education.

In line with this agreement, the main assignments are

  • to promote learning in mathematics, natural sciences and technology, especially among children and young people, in collaboration with Universeum, teachers, schools and student teachers in the region by using AI, computer visualisations and technology-intensive environments arranged for learning. The professor is expected to become involved in issues derived from current research related to visualisation and Science, Technology, and Mathematics Education and the organisation of and learning in environments such as science centres and museums. For example, by identifying appropriate aspects of visualisation and representations within STEM, to use audio-visual and haptic tools to navigate in visualised data and virtual environments, to explore and solve problems and to successfully implement exhibitions and interventions.
  • to establish and conduct research to gain deeper insight into the relationships between the learning of children and young people in the fields of science, technology and mathematics and interaction patterns, perception and learning processes when exploring issues with data visualisations and interacting in digital environments in general. This also includes the implications for learning within STEM and sustainability issues among children and young people in particular. Of particular importance is the long-term development of a broad research network with a strong connection to various research environments.

All assignments are distinctly collaborative in nature.

The field of the position has influences from, and contact with, several disciplinary specialities that in various ways include, and overlap, with teaching and learning. Of particular importance are Science, Technology and Mathematics Education, and in digital media and tools, visualisation and interactive design. To carry out the assignments, background and experience is needed in one and preferably several of these areas along with the experience of being involved in the interface between them, with close connections with the varied international research field of Education.

The professorship is organisationally located at the Faculty of Education.

The professor will be involved in collaboration with Stanford University and Chalmers University of Technology and work in the context of established interdisciplinary collaborations at the University of Gothenburg. Participants in the research environment collaborate with the IT Faculty through a joint involvement in the international master’s programme in Learning and IT.

Candidates should have a documented background in research on interaction and learning in the STEM field, with a focus on digital learning environments. They should have knowledge about the design of digital learning environments and/or design-based research and be able to document experiences of working with relevant research and supervision of doctoral students. Furthermore, they should have a documented ability to work with different types of empirical data, such as large-scale data volumes, survey studies and/or detailed ethnographic observations or other relevant qualitative methods. Successful publication is required in areas such as technological change, design, subject didactics in natural sciences, mathematics and technology and/or communication and learning. Research considered particularly relevant to the position is in established fields such as Learning Sciences (ISLS), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Participatory Design (PDC) focused on STEM as well as Science Education (SE), Mathematics Education (ME), Technology Education (TE) and sustainability issues among children and young people.
