Job description

You will prepare, coordinate and teach new courses on Second Language Learning; supervise a team of language learning staff members, and you foster their professional development; you will carry out research projects; and oversee undergraduate, graduate and PhD students in the field of language acquisition in the broader context of European multi-cultural societies. You will develop new ideas in research and education, and acquire funding (independently or jointly with other colleagues) for future research. You will be working in a field that is in development and will be in the lead for further progress.

We offer this new position in the European Languages and Cultures programme, organized within our faculty. This programme consists of a multidisciplinary team of researchers collaborating with other departments in the faculty and international guests researchers. We address many issues in European Society in the fields of linguistics, literature and culture, and politics in a global context.
We offer you a position with 60% of your time for teaching (including administration) and 40% research.

 

Qualifications

• you have a PhD in linguistics or a closely related field
• with your multidisciplinary orientation, you combine knowledge of second language learning and foreign-language acquisition and teaching with an interest in developments in language pedagogy in the broader context of our changing European Societies; you have expertise in language instruction in a multilingual, multicultural context
• you have teaching experience with relevant qualifications (such as BKO-Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs, Basic Education qualification) or have the willingness to require a qualification within two years
• you have experience in designing new courses and experience at coordinating teaching programmes at university level
• you conduct and generate top research, as evidenced by a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals and furthermore pursue research grants and other forms of external funding
• you are a people oriented manager; your strengths are organizing, entrepreneurship and communication
• you have the ability to communicate, teach and publish in English (CEFR C1 level for reading, listening, writing, speaking)
• proficiency in one of the other languages taught in the department (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Swedish) at the B2 level or higher
• knowledge of Dutch or willingness to learn it within a reasonable period may be one of the conditions for tenure (CEFR B2 for reading and listening, and CEFR B1 for writing and speaking) within two years; the faculty will support you by providing training.

 

Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

  • a salary for the (junior) professor dependent on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 5,294 (scale 14 Dutch Universities) to a maximum of € 8,127 (scale H2) gross per month for a full-time position
  • an 8% holiday allowance and an annual bonus of 8.3% and participation in a pension scheme for employees; favorable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants
  • 232 holiday hours per calendar year for a full-time employment
  • a full-time appointment; depending on your development in teaching, research and management your appointment will be permanent or will initially be on a temporary basis for five years with the possibility of becoming a permanent position following a positive performance review.

The appointee will ideally commence as soon as possible.
