Research Project "Albanian as Source Language in Switzerland and Germany":

Within the framework of the project approved by the SNSF / DFG, a comprehensive picture of the linguistic practice of Albanian speakers of native speakers over three to four generations in different socio-cultural environments in Switzerland and Germany is to be gained. The findings also serve as a starting point for modeling the mechanisms of language contact and language change in concrete historical situations. This results in two main objectives:

1) Development of appropriate methods for preserving and strengthening the language of origin as a means of social participation based on language perception, language awareness and language practice of Albanian speakers of origin
2) In-depth understanding of the influence of sociocultural configurations on the development and evolution of specific linguistic structures and linguistic diversity.

To achieve the goals, three complexes work together
1. Construction of identity: speech perception and language awareness
2. Language practice: multilingualism and contact varieties
3. Language change: vertical and horizontal impulses

The research team consists of two PIs (Sonnenhauser UZH, Riehl LMU), two cooperation partners (Widmer UZH, Selimi PH Schwyz), a postdoc (UZH) and two PhDs (UZH, LMU); see link.
