Research Professor, guidance research

The Finnish Institute for Educational Research is currently seeking to recruit a candidate for a permanent position of Research Professor in guidance research, starting on the 3rd of January 2022 or as soon as possible after that.

Tasks and qualifications

The position of the Research Professor is located in the field of guidance research, more precisely, the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in lifelong guidance. The task of the Research Professor is to develop guidance research in general and especially research focusing on the use of ICT in guidance from the perspective of lifelong guidance.

Research Professor is responsible for leading research in the field of guidance research, for strengthening guidance research infrastructure in cooperation with different stakeholders and through applying for external research funding. Research professor is expected also to lead the development of research focusing on guidance in cooperation with stakeholders and to develop the use of research-based knowledge in national and international decision-making. Research Professor is also responsible for developing doctoral studies in cooperation with other units of the University of Jyväskylä.

Applicants are required to have a suitable doctoral degree in education or in a related discipline. Previous experience and evidence on research related to this position's content are a clear advantage for the applicant. We expect evidence on high-level publishing, active participation in policy-making processes related to guidance at national and international levels and ability to procure research funding.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Research Professor are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The selected person is required to have a command of Finnish language. In certain cases, the University may grant exemption from this requirement. In this position, the Research Professor is expected to have a good command of English language.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System (starting with 4 877 – 7 186 euros per month). A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. There is a trial period of six months at the start of the period of employment.

2) A numbered list of all scientific and other publications – drawn up according to the categorisation of the Academy of Finland the instructions of the Academy of Finland

3) A brief (2–3 pages) written account of the applicant’s scientific research, merits in scientific and research leadership, merits in supervision of research work including a clarification on received external funding and responsibilities in externally funded research projects


4) A brief (2–3 pages) written account of pedagogical training and teaching merits i.e. teaching portfolio

5) A brief (2–3 pages) written account of applicant’s societal interaction and international cooperation


6) A maximum of 10 main publications, numbered in accordance with the list of publications

7) A brief (2–3 pages) account of how the applicant plans to develop the research and societal interaction related to the domain of the post in the FIER.
