Description

The Department of English at UC Santa Barbara (https://english.ucsb.edu/) is seeking applications for an Assistant Specialist position with an anticipated start date in spring 2020. This position will be 1 year at 50%, with the possibility of renewal based on receipt of subsequent grants and assessment of the Assistant Specialist.

The research project this position will be working on is under the English Broadside Ballad Archive (EBBA; https://ebba.english.ucsb.edu), an early modern archive that mounts online digital images, recordings, transcriptions and thick cataloguing of original artifacts (sheets of paper printed on one-side in black-letter or gothic font, with many woodcut illustrations and a named tune title to which the song should be sung). The Assistant Specialist, working directly under the Director of the project, Professor Patricia Fumerton, must have acquired wide expertise in all these areas of the project in order to teach and supervise graduate and undergraduate students in their operations—a workforce of some 60 students a year. The Assistant Specialist must also have expertise in researching broadside ballads and how to incorporate them into the EBBA digital archive, according to the archive’s specific scholarly standards. Finally, the Assistant Specialist position requires experience in dealing with rare book rooms and writing grant proposals for the project.

The minimum qualifications: Applicants must hold a PhD in English or a related field, with a special focus on Early Modern England (1500–1701), or have five years of experience demonstrating expertise in fields specifically related to the archive.

Additional qualifications: Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate their past professional activities related to broadside ballads, such as publications, conference presentations, or other contributions to the field prior to the commencement of the appointment.

Preferred qualifications: Applicants should have experience working with rare book rooms, writing grant proposals, and working with complicated budgets on spreadsheets.

To apply, please go to the following link: https://recruit.ap.ucsb.edu/JPF01729. Applicants should submit curriculum vitae, statement of research experience, cover letter, and contact information for 3 references. Complete and submit your application by April 6, 2020 for primary consideration.

The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
