At UNSW, new educational initiatives are constantly being developed in the PVCESE for implementation in the Faculties and Schools, while many innovations introduced by individual academics, Schools and Faculties have potential for institution-wide application.

The Nexus Program will provide a critical missing link between organisational units at UNSW, connecting faculties to each other and to the PVCESE to develop and implement coordinated solutions to challenges in education and student experience. Through the recruitment of education-related staff distributed throughout UNSW’s Sydney and Canberra-based schools, Nexus Program will provide the Schools and Faculties with extra capacity to enable widespread implementation of educational initiatives. Additionally, it will provide a mechanism for teaching academics to contribute to and provide feedback on centrally developed education programs.

Nexus Fellows are education focused academic staff dedicated to educational excellence and student experience at UNSW. Those who are appointed to this prestigious role will be expected to lead and influence colleagues to successfully drive educational excellence and adoption of new educational practices at the university through collaboration with the Pro Vice Chancellor Education & Student Experience portfolio.

This role will focus on playing a central role in supporting the School of Art & Design, in the first 3 years as a Nexus Fellow, and then as an Education Focused Academic.

The Nexus Fellow will report to the Head of School with a dotted line to the Faculty Deputy/Associate Dean Education.

 

Responsibilities:

As a Nexus Fellow:

  • Contribute to colleagues’ professional development in pedagogy, educational technology, emerging teaching practices and scholarly approaches to teaching through faculty and UNSW programs & initiatives.
  • Demonstrate leadership and positively influence educational culture and community in the School and Faculty
  • Collaborate with colleagues to implement new institution-wide initiatives that seek to improve learning & teaching.
  • Collaborate with other Education Focused Fellows – Nexus Program in the faculty to lead the development of local solutions to current educational challenges.
  • Contribute to the operation of the UNSW Education Co-op by providing advice and guidance to colleagues from across the university (approximately one day per month).
  • Convene up to one course per year, conduct classes, assess student learning achievements, and support students in postgraduate and undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.

As an EF Academic

  • Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
  • Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements, and support students in undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.
  • Design and develop learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback, using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
  • Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning with the support of more senior academics.
  • Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
  • Manage course administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance.

 

You will have:

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills, including the ability to influence others and drive change.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development, and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g., relevant discipline-based curriculum design and development at a variety of levels and scales.
