The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology have eight departments and carries out large and varied work within research and education with the purpose to understand people as cultural and social beings. The faculties have some 700 employees and around 4000 students.


The Department of History is one of the eight departments within the Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology. It is a large department consisting of three divisions: the Division of history, the Division of human rights and the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies. Around 70 teachers and researchers work at the department. They undertake teaching within the BA programmes in history and human rights, the masters programme in history and the international masters programmes in human rights and Asian studies. The department also has a large post-graduate programme with Ph.D. students in history and human rights, as well as a research school in history.


The subject Human Rights Studies is multidisciplinary and adopts historical, philosophical, ethical, legal and political perspectives on human rights. There is an undergraduate degree programme in the subject taught in Swedish and a new two-year Master's programme taught in English. There are a large number of applications for these programmes. Sweden's only multidisciplinary PhD programme in human rights is also offered here. The research focuses on human rights as a complex social phenomenon. Among other things, there is a focus on children and youth, cultural memory, conflict, violence and accountability, legal actors, political philosophy and history of philosophy as well as the history of human rights in the modern era.

The work duties include teaching and supervision at all levels on the undergraduate degree programme in Human Rights Studies, the Master’s programme in Human Rights Studies and freestanding courses at the Division of Human Rights. Duties may also include teaching and supervision on the PhD programme. The Division of Human Rights has a collaborative way of working, which means that a good ability and willingness to work in a team is valued highly. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in development of courses, programmes, research and external engagement. An interest in pedagogical development and the potentials of multidisciplinary environments is valued highly. Ability to teach in both Swedish (or Danish or Norwegian) and English is a requirement.


The position includes time for research, which the successful candidate is expected to dedicate to his or her own research and publications. All staff are expected to contribute to the subject’s research environment, e.g. through participation in seminars, development of research networks and applications for research funding.


The division particularly seeks expertise within the following areas: socio-economic rights, discrimination, international politics, political theory/philosophy, ethics, gender issues, civil society agents, as well as methods and methodology in the humanities and social sciences.


For appointment as a senior lecturer, the individual must have:


been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research expertise or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve,

demonstrated teaching expertise, and

completed at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means.

General assessment criteria: the degree of research, teaching, administrative and other expertise that is of value in view of the work duties and subject matter of the post as well as other personal skills of relevance to perform the duties well.


For employment as senior lecturer the following is specifically required:


a good national and international standing as a researcher,

good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods,

an ability to participate in supervising doctoral students to achieve a PhD,

an ability to cooperate with wider society and to communicate his or her activities as well as otherwise leading and developing activities.



 Desirable qualifications:


documented knowledge of human rights as a multidisciplinary subject and research field, and

previous experience of and documented skills in teaching in human rights, specifically within any of the aforementioned areas of expertise, from beginner through to advanced levels,

research and publications within any of the aforementioned areas of expertise with a specialisation in human rights,

documented good ability to work in a team with several members of teaching staff as well as a good ability for collaboration with other staff in the workplace,

demonstrated ability to obtain external funding and act as a research leader,

documented experience of and good ability in course directorship and pedagogical development work,

documented experience of teaching and supervision of Phd students,

documented completion of ten weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education.
