DESCRIPTION

The Department of Music seeks to appoint the Sorensen Director of Choral Music, effective July 1, 2019. This is a full-time, open rank, Academic Senate position for either a Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (similar to tenure-track) or Lecturer with Security of Employment (similar to tenured), depending on qualifications and experience. The ideal candidate must have national experience and stature in choral conducting and teaching and will possess a clear vision for an evolving choral area. The candidate will play an innovative leadership role in our undergraduate and graduate music programs with responsibilities that include being director of Chamber Choir as well as the creation of new choral ensembles that could include both our campus and local community. The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear recruitment plan that could include touring, participation in conventions and conferences, and community engagement. In addition to conducting choral ensembles, the candidate will be expected to teach a variety of music courses based on their background and expertise.


The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through teaching, professional activity, and service.


The Department offers the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, and composition, and the B.M., M.M., and D.M.A. degrees in performance. As a faculty known for its interdisciplinary culture, we encourage applicants whose scholarship and teaching can engage students across sub-disciplines in music, as well as across our campus.


Applicants must meet the following basic and additional qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
• DMA in Choral Conducting, or equivalent professional experience required at time of application.


Additional Qualifications:
• At least two years of experience and stature in choral conducting and teaching at the national level.


Preferred Qualifications:
• At least two years of teaching experience at the university level is desired.
• Experience in studio teaching of voice is highly preferred.
• Experience in the field of interdisciplinary creative projects.
• Demonstrated record of significant performances and recordings.
