Applications are invited for this full-time, fixed-term post in the Department of American and Canadian Studies (ACS). ACS is a vibrant academic community with a focus on excellence in teaching and research. The department’s work is of the highest quality, and it was the top-ranked American Studies department in the UK for research impact and power in the Research Excellence Framework 2014.

The purpose of the role is to provide teaching relief for the Head of Department and other faculty currently seconded to non-teaching roles. The successful candidate will undertake teaching and teaching-related administration in the Department of American & Canadian Studies. Duties may vary, depending on the demands of the teaching programme. In the first instance, teaching will include co-teaching on the Level 2 optional modules A History of Crime and Punishment in the U.S., and The U.S. and the World in the American Century: U.S. Foreign Policy 1898-2008. The successful candidate will also be responsible for provision of pastoral care and responsibility for allotted administrative roles (in areas related to assessment, examinations, or attendance, for example).

Applicants should have a PhD in American Studies or cognate field. We particularly encourage interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approaches. Candidates should have the ability to deliver modules to large (50+) and small groups, using lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, as appropriate. A proven track record in university teaching and experience of convening modules is desirable, as is the ability to design course materials and organise the delivery and assessment of taught courses within an agreed quality framework.
