The Foundation Arts team and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham are looking to appoint a Teaching Associate on a permanent contract. You will have a PhD in philosophy. You will need to be able to contribute to teaching in some of the six modules that make up the Foundation Arts programme: Critical Thinking and Reflective Learning; Important Thinkers through History; Language and Culture; Media, Communication and Society; Narrative and Creativity; The Project. We will also need the appointee to be able to contribute to the delivery of the first year Philosophy curriculum in at least one of the following areas: Logic, Philosophy of Mind, Ethics, and Epistemology.

We want to continue to tackle the issues faced by underrepresented groups in philosophy and the Arts more generally – whether in staffing, curriculum, teaching, the public face of the disciplines, or in other ways. And so, you will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference to issues of underrepresentation, through your experience, work, ethos, identity, or in some other way.

We believe in an inclusive working environment for all. And so, we are welcoming, supportive, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values. We are, therefore, particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented in philosophy and other areas in the Arts, such as those of underrepresented genders (e.g., women, non-binary, trans) and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.

You will contribute to an exceptional education for Foundation Arts students and students in Philosophy.

Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions based on the person specification, rather than CV or letter – for this reason we advise applicants to begin the application process as early as possible, so that you are aware of what we require.

As a Teaching Associate you will be expected to

  • deliver innovative teaching and curriculum design
  • provide curriculum leadership within your area
  • contribute positively and proactively to the teaching culture, especially considering issues of underrepresentation
  • supervise and examine undergraduate and foundation year students
  • support tutorial groups, developing their knowledge and learning skills
  • take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students, dealing with sensitive issues
  • be responsible for administrative duties

The post is offered on a permanent, full time (36.25 hours per week) contract, commencing in September 2022. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Jonathan Tallant, email: jonathan.tallant@nottingham.ac.uk; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.

Our University is a supportive, inclusive, caring and positive community. We warmly welcome those of different cultures, ethnicities and beliefs – indeed this very diversity is vital to our success, it is fundamental to our values and enriches life on campus. We welcome applications from UK, Europe and from across the globe. For more information on the support we offer our international colleagues, see our Moving to Nottingham pages.

For successful international applicants, we provide financial support for your visa and the immigration health surcharge, plus an interest-free loan to help cover the cost of immigration-related expenses for any dependants accompanying you to the UK. For more information please see the our webpage on Financial support for visas and the immigration health surcharge.
