Temporary Part time Lecturer Pool in Ancient Near and Modern Middle Eastern Studies University of California Berkeley, College of Letters & Science United States

DESCRIPTION

The Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified part time, temporary instructors to teach during the fall, spring, or summer sessions, should an opening arise, lower and upper division lecture courses, lower division Reading and Composition courses, and/or seminars in the fields of the ancient Near and modern Middle East. Openings are most likely to occur in the areas of Egyptology, Near Eastern Art and Archaeology, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, Islamic Studies, Islamic Art and Middle Eastern literature. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the Department. These Lecturer appointments are typically part- time, are made at the beginning of the semester, and may be renewable depending on need, funding, and job performance. The pool will remain in place for one calendar year. The final date for applicants will be August 30, 2019.


Minimum full-time annual salary is $54,738. Salary is commensurate with experience and education. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) some or all of the following: teaching one or more 3 or 4 credit unit courses (3 or 4 class contact hours per week with students, as appropriate); preparing course materials; maintaining a course website; supervising graduate student instructors or graders; holding office hours; and assigning grades.


Minimum Basic Qualifications (by time of application):
The successful candidate must have B.A./B.S. (or equivalent international degree) in Egyptology, Near Eastern Art and Archaeology, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, Islamic Studies, Islamic Art or Middle Eastern literature.


Additional Qualifications (by start date):
Experience teaching college composition is required for Reading and Composition courses.


For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.


Preferred qualifications (by start date): College level teaching experience is preferred but not required for all other positions.
