Position Description

The Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures, Harvard University, seeks to make a tenure-track, or possibly a tenured, appointment. Candidates must have excellent command of at least one Celtic language. We are open to applicants specializing in any period, and based in any discipline, with research and teaching interests in the cultures of the Celtic speaking lands. We would especially welcome applicants with an interest in environmental humanities, including environmental change, population movements, and/or landscape studies, as these are reflected in literature, oral tradition, archaeology and/or the historical record.

Promise of excellence in both teaching and research is essential, as well as a doctorate conferred by the time the appointment begins. The appointee will teach and advise students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and will be expected to develop innovative courses at both levels. It is expected that some of the undergraduate courses offered by the appointee will contribute to Harvard’s Program in Folklore and Mythology. The appointee will also undertake administrative responsibilities in the Celtic Department and be expected to participate in the interdepartmental and interdisciplinary intellectual life of the Division of Arts and Humanities and the wider scholarly community at Harvard and beyond.

Basic Qualifications

Excellent command of at least one Celtic language. Doctorate required by the time the appointment begins.

Additional Qualifications

Ability and willingness to contribute to the undergraduate teaching mission of Harvard’s Program in Folklore and Mythology.
