The Faculty of Arts and Philosophy is seeking to fill the following full-time (100 %) vacancy in the Department of Applied Linguistics/Translation and Interpreting

Job description

 

The assignment has a structural character in the three core activities of tenured academic staff: teaching, research and service.

  • You will be assigned the following lecturing duties:You will supervise students who are writing their BA and MA theses.

    • English: Grammar and proficiency (BA2, 1146FLWTTA, 3 credits)
    • English: Specialised translation into Dutch (Subtitling) (Master's in Translation, 2067FLWVER, 3 credits)
    • English: Consecutive interpreting (Master's in Interpreting, 2009FLWTOL, 6 credits, partim Dutch–English)
    • Translation and Interpreting Studies (BA2, 1141FLWTTA, 3 credits)
    • Translator’s toolbox (Master's in Translation, 2051FLWVER, 6 credits, partim)
    • Media accessibility (Master's in Translation, 2092FLWVER, 6 credits)
  • You will conduct interdisciplinary research in the field of audiovisual Translation Studies (subtitling, intersemiotic translation, media accessibility) within the English language section.

  • Your research will be in line with the profile and vision of the research group Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies (TricS).

  • You will acquire and manage (national and international) external funding.

  • You will contribute to the development of teaching, research and scientific service (to the wider community) within the department of Applied Linguistics/Translation & Interpreting.

  • You will provide services by contributing professionally to department, faculty and university governance. You serve the professional community and community at large as a scientific expert.

 

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate (PhD) in Translation Studies, Linguistics or Literature (or equivalent) with English as your language of study. A doctorate that is focused on audiovisual Translation Studies will be considered an asset.

  • Demonstrable experience with research and/or academic teaching in Translation and Interpreting Studies will be considered an asset.

  • Demonstrable experience with teaching translation and interpreting courses (English into Dutch and Dutch into English) at an academic level will be considered an asset.

  • Demonstrable practical experience with subtitling, intersemiotic translation and media accessibility, as well as a network with professional partners in the field (authorities and private sector) will also be considered an asset.

  • You are a native speaker of Dutch and have an excellent command of Dutch, in both its written and oral forms.

  • You have an excellent (near-native) command of English, in both its written and oral forms.

  • An international network within Translation Studies will be considered an asset.

  • You have several years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.

  • The focus in your teaching corresponds with the educational vision of the university.

  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.

  • You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).

  • You are quality-orientated, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

 

We offer

  • either a position with a structural assignment as a lecturer, in a temporary appointment in the tenure-track system for a term of five years. This position will lead to an immediate permanent appointment as a senior lecturer if performance is assessed favourably on the basis of previously fixed and publicly announced evaluation criteria;

  • or a position with a structural assignment as a senior lecturer or higher, generally entailing a permanent appointment. In the case of a first appointment to the corps of academic personnel (ZAP), the university board may proceed to a temporary appointment for a period not exceeding three years. This position will lead to a permanent appointment if performance is assessed favourably;

  • the date of appointment will be 1 October 2019;

  • a full-time gross monthly salary ranging for a lecturer from € 4.255,06 - € 6.272,13; and for senior lecturer from € 4.872,61 - € 7.564,80;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
