University Lecturer in the History of Modern Political Thought since 1900

The Faculty of History wishes to appoint a University Lecturer in the History of Modern Political Thought since 1900. It is expected that the successful candidate will take up the post, based in central Cambridge, with effect from 1 October 2019.


The appointee must have experience of teaching and research in the broad field of the History of Modern Political Thought, with a primary emphasis on Twentieth-Century Political Thought. The main duties of the post include class teaching and individual supervision of MPhil and PhD students and the provision of lectures for Paper 5 in Part II of the undergraduate Historical Tripos, Political Philosophy and Political Thought since 1890. Research of international standing will be expected.


Candidates should demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills; show a commitment to supporting students academically; and be able and ready to co-operate in Faculty affairs, including undertaking administration. The Faculty welcomes applications from both early-career scholars and those who have established careers. By the start of the appointment, the successful candidate must hold, or be close to completion of, a doctorate (or equivalent) in a relevant field.

This is a permanent appointment to retirement age, subject to the successful completion of an initial 5 year probationary period.
