The Faculty of Arts ( of the University of Helsinki is Finland’s oldest institution for teaching and research in the humanities and the largest in terms of the structure and range of disciplines. The study of religions explores people’s beliefs and spiritual traditions in historical and contemporary culture and society. The research methods and approaches used include those of anthropology, history, cultural studies, psychology and sociology. We are currently recruiting a scholar of religion with a broad knowledge and a successful track record in research and teaching. The successful candidate also has research methodology skills that can be more widely used in cultural studies. The position is based at the Department of Cultures, Faculty of Arts.


The duties of the university lecturer of study of religions studies include the provision of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in accordance with the degree requirements as well as the supervision and examination of theses and dissertations. The duties requiring good cooperation skills include participating in the planning and development of teaching together with the other staff of the Department, degree programmes and the discipline. The university lecturer will conduct research in the field and contribute to the discipline’s development. In addition, the university lecturer is expected to apply for external research funding.




An appointee to the position of university lecturer or clinical instructor shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.


When assessing the qualifications of applicants for the position of university lecturer, attention shall be paid to scientific publications and other research results of academic value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration.


To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he/she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Support for language studies is offered.



Annual gross salary for a university lecturer varies between 39,000 and 54,000 euros depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. There is a six-month trial period for the position.


Health care services and standard Finnish pension benefits are provided for the University employees.
