Job description

Job summary

Imperial College London is one of the world’s greatest universities, renowned for its ground-breaking research, talented community of staff, students and alumni, and its international reach. Our mission is to achieve enduring excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine, and business, for the benefit of society.

The College was founded in 1907 in South Kensington, bringing together nineteenth-century institutions including the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines, and City and Guilds College.

From its location in this great cultural quarter, Imperial provides one of the world’s best educations in STEM subjects for more than 19,000 students, over half of whom come from overseas, reflecting its status as the UK’s most international university. Its alumni and members also include 14 Nobel laureates and three Fields Medallists.

In 2022, Imperial college was selected as University of the Year in the Sunday Times Good University Guide. The College was also awarded University of the Year for Student Experience 2022, recognising the significant increase in investment in learning and teaching, including the development of a world-class hybrid educational experience.

Imperial invested over £7m in improving teaching spaces across all its campuses within the last year alone. This sits alongside a sustained level of investment in student wellbeing throughout the pandemic, including generous levels of hardship funding, and financial training support for the shift to digital learning.

It is in this context that we are seeking to recruit our next Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience). As Vice-Provost you will be responsible for the delivery of the College’s learning and teaching strategy across our four faculties. You will be responsible for leading the delivery of the College’s strategic aims for the provision of a world-class education for its students, the enrichment of its student experience, and to ensure that an ‘Imperial education’ reflects the College’s dynamic and enterprising culture.

The incoming Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) will be a collaborative and strategic individual who will play a critical role in the leadership of the College as a whole, as well as owning delivery within their own portfolio. With a deep understanding of the rapidly evolving higher education landscape, they will have a strong track record of delivering an excellent education and student experience, and steering positive change in a complex, high performing university. They will be distinguished and internationally recognised in their field, and ready to join the executive of a world-leading University.

As a leading institution in the heart of London, Imperial College proudly upholds a longstanding commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. Valuing the diversity of the Imperial community is one of the four cornerstones of the recent strategy and Imperial College London strongly encourages applications from those with a diverse range of backgrounds.

We will build a supportive, diverse, inclusive and highly motivated staff community across all disciplines, functions and activities. This will help us to attract and retain the talented and diverse staff we need to achieve our mission.

The College is a proud signatory to the San-Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which means that in hiring and promotion decisions, we evaluate applicants on the quality of their work, not the journal impact factor where it is published. For more information, see www.imperial.ac.uk/research-and-innovation/about-imperial-research/research-evaluation/

The College believes that the use of animals in research is vital to improve human and animal health and welfare. Animals may only be used in research programmes where their use is shown to be necessary for developing new treatments and making medical advances. Imperial is committed to ensuring that, in cases where this research is deemed essential, all animals in the College’s care are treated with full respect, and that all staff involved with this work show due consideration at every level. www.imperial.ac.uk/research-and-innovation/about-imperial-research/research-integrity/animal-research
